DR is generally a good choice for thunderbirds, because DR has an especially long winding length. Which is needed, after the tail piece and the long headstocks.

I had a Michael Kelly AEB 5er. Couldn't get used to the thick body in front of my thick body. It put everything at a weird angle. Sounded really good for big band-like a UB.

I like Cobalt Flats a whole lot. Funny thing is I don't have anything strung with flats except the fretless, and those are chromes. The Flamingo had tapes, but I swapped those for heavier Burners. I hated the Burners to start, but they just needed to break in. The '15 has DR nickel rounds. I do not remember exactly which. I think round core but don't remember. I will probably put the tapes on it since the pickups are so hot. The magical '01 has Black Beauties. It probably always will. Some things are too good to mess with.

Gotta sling down low. Mine has tapewounds. I was using it tuned down 1/2 step to play Sledgehammer. With pick, chorus and the octave pedal, it was the voice of a Demented God. I just got tired of schlepping a bass for one song.
I bought it mostly for big band use. It didn't sound that great to me right in front of the amp, but people across the room said it sounded like a UB. I shoulda got a 4 string-the B was weak. This was back when I always stood and I just could not get used to it. Mighta worked better sitting. The much slimmer guy I sold it to loved it.

That's what I've been calling sea foam green. Do you know what the color is actually called? It's my favorite color on the bird.

My latest bass here together with my first bass! The 1991 Orville I got in November last year and the 1967 Yamaha SB-A5 is my first, think I bough her in 1974. And both are reverse
Identical bodies, I don't know. Virtually, yes they do.
Although the VP headstock is quite a bit bigger.

Glancing through the classifieds it's amazing how many Jazz-type or single coil basses there are for sale. No attempt to make a scientific observation and conclusion. I know they are popular, but it was interesting to see one Jazz/SC bass after another for sale and be so dominant. Didn't see any Thunderbirds! Of course there's not much reason to sell a Thunderbird.

Yep, There always seem to be a lot of Js and 5ers. I don’t play either one so helps keep GAS away.
