I was actually considering that, believe it or not with my not being fond of all black. I like chrome! But black may work really well. I'll have to look things over in good light. Which we didn't have yesterday. As far as sound, It sound like a Thunderbird, but one with different character. Different not being bad, it just doesn't sound like the others I have, which I didn't think it would, and liked that idea of something a little different. It's more subdued in the upper mids and highs, I would say. I'm curious to try some of my go to rounds (or flats!) on it to see what that does. I'm not sure what to make of the DR black beauties. Sunday I will give it a real test outside the house.

I have...
Infeld Supperalloys on the '64
GHS Boomers on one VP (really amazing!) GHS Progressives sounded really good as well.
String Joy NP Rounds on the other VP (Similar to Boomers in some ways), but Fender flats sound great as well on it
TI Flats on the '76, Fenders flats sound good on it also
'64 Embassy has TI Jazz Rounds
So I'm kind of all over. The commonality would be thick lows, solid low-mids with punch, pleasant but present highs to varying degrees. I don't try for the angry piano sound. It just doesn't fit what I do. But I do like big thick surround sound lows without being muddy or indistinct. I don't try to cut through anything and compete with guitars or keyboards, but try to surround the sound of the band.

Ah, ok. I have no experience with the Black Beauties, but we have different taste in strings. I think the DR Hi-Beams may work well for you.

Thank you, I have never tried those but do seem interesting. They may definitely be in my future now. What is it that you think they would achieve or how would they benefit this bass in particular? Sunbeams I have tried, and like on certain basses. Nickel low riders as well.

The Hi-Beams are lighter in tension, where I prefer very high. And DRs tend to be quite tame in tone, where I like very aggressive.

Hmmmm.... A Thunderbird painted those colors might work pretty well. But not the fretless 'Bird, since I won't be changing the hardware to gold. It will keep its black hardware and black pickguard. Plum Crazy might work, but I think bright, metallic green would work better with black. And the Alumitone pickups are black and brushed aluminum. That would work with bright metallic green, but not so well with some other colors.
