Thunderbird Club

Does anyone remember this? I've had a lot going on since I posted this beast two and half years ago, family stuff that meant I couldn't justify fiddling around with this project. Anyway, this is what it looks like after being able to spend some of the summer of lockdown starting to tidy up the messed up bits of it in preparation for painting it.

Cool project! What are your plans for paint and finishing? Will you do new hardware and pickups?

Excellent! Our Kara here is busy herself with projects. Please post pics!

I'm leaning towards a blue or turquoise finish for it. I've done refins with gunstock oil and other materials before, but nothing in terms of spray paint, so I'll see how it goes. Hardware and electronics will probably be a total gut-job. It had black and I'd much prefer chrome and/or nickel.

Proof timing is everything: I just found out my 'extra' money is gonna be going for a somewhat expensive HVAC repair.:banghead:
Come on man. It's going to be Winter n Florida. How bad can it be.

Seriously though, really hate to hear that. That kind of think is never cheap and always painful. The house we bought/buying has two systems, both 15 ys old. I'm praying for a few more years.

I do hope you'll continue and share with us - again, very cool!

Totally sucks. We went through that in ‘18. 20 year old system died. Let’s just say it cost more than a ‘63 Tbird the replace. The upside is that the new one is a lot more efficient. We save about $30 to $40 on our PG&E bill every month. So it’ll pay for itself in twenty years.
Generally after 15 yrs or so there are enough advances in equipment that you can and should actually see a difference in the bill, unless it was a top of the line efficient unit to begin with. Yes, last time we replaced ours it cost more than any bass I have value wise.

Quincy! He is my Mom’s all time favorite.
I saw Klugman ride by at the Derby when I was a kid. The way he was rubbing his head I figured he was still hungover from the night before or just lost a years pay. (After the Derby race was over we would walk in for the last race to two. Nobody cared after the Derby was over. The things you see. Looks kind of "sophisticated" and classy on TV. Reality is different. I grew up in a not so nice area right around the Downs. The most obnoxious people I've ever seen at a mass gatherings go to horse races, at least there.)

Well, my vote is Pelham Blue. Cool project. Reranch has has a lot of goof stuff on their site. We have a resident expert here, @JIO, who does amazing work. Look up his many threads. He would probably offer tips if asked.

It's a really weird industry. Some of the nastiest places I have ever been are the barns at horse racing tracks.o_O

It is. And attracts some real unsavory types. The people who take care of the horses on the backside of the tracks are generally treated like like dirt and the horses like royalty, and thus having more value. There are a few decent people involved, but they are the exception. I used to know a jockey manager (Pat Day was one client), who was a great person.

Got to use the burst VP today. Gave the '06 a rest. I tried some DR Pure Blues that I had. Wasn't bad, but wasn't as good as several other strings on a VP (including Cobalt Flats:bag: and especially Boomers and Stringjoys which are exceptional). Nothing wrong with them just lacked some punch the others had. And @MCF I did miss the feel of the '06. I love the way it plays and feels. As much as I love VPs and prefer their sound, the Gibson has a noticeable feel-factor difference.

I’ve a soft spot for horses. My cousin had several from the time she was 10 and still has one. I had enough money when I was 11 to buy one. We lived in a community with stables. My Dad convinced me motorcycles were better. Less upkeep. So I got into bikes. I think horses are magnificent animals. I’ve been to a track once. For a work event several years ago. Santa Anita. A beautiful park. But the whole thing bothered me. I refused to go the next several years I was with that firm. I still want a horse. I’ve ridden sporadically over the years and think it would be a good retirement activity. We’ll see.

Man. I hate changing strings.

I played all my basses today. I pulled down the MIM 7ender P with chromes (4 years and counting). Hadn’t played it in three weeks. It was in perfect tune and intonation. Channeled my inner John McVie. The Chain, Go Your Own Way, Rhiannon. I love that bass.

Now I’m playing the ‘15 Gibby. If I could only have two basses, it would be the ‘15 and the MIM P. Thankfully though, I get to have many more. And I love them all.

I have two Gibsons. My ‘15 is the best bass I’ve ever played. Pre-Covid, I went to a lot of stores and played hundreds of basses. Nothing compares to it. My ‘13 NR is great, I’ll never part with it. But my ’15 is in a class all by itself. Absolute perfection. The standard reverse Gibson Thunderbird is one of the best basses ever made. Every player should own one.

The '15 sounds to be one amazing instrument. What to sell it? Money could go towards said retirement horse.:D Well, a saddle maybe. I would love to own a '15 one day. Likely won't happen. Unless you start really wanting that horse!

Horses are wonderful, amazing animals. Almost majestic. I don't like seeing them used that way either. Really dislike dog races. Dogs are like people--only better!

What about the 2015 makes it the best?

I have to agree on the feel, my '89 Gibson is probably my fave player of all my Birds - the neck is slim and just fits my hand really well.

I know some of you have moved your rear strap button further up (like on the Blackbird, in the pic below) - any suggestions for location? Or just guess at what seems the right place? :nailbiting:

Also, what's the best way to keep the finish from chipping/cracking at final drill diameter? I assume the drill area should at least be covered with tape first, but are there any other precautions? I've not drilled into pretty guitar paint yet...

(...probably be a good idea to make a practice run on the GBP...:cautious: )
