Best mixed with darn near anything (to try to cover up that taste)! I never cared for anything mixed and never mixed anything with shine, but mixing it with just about anything couldn't hurt!
Smooth would never describe any I had. But people are more refined in making things these days.

don’t really care for multiple distillations, kinda like the faint taste of corn mash..
Even in Louisville there were several distillers years ago and you could drive down 7th Street and smell the mash and even the finished product 24/7. Only occasionally now.

You must of had some classy shine then! I've yet to taste anything from "the hills" that anyone would drink for the taste. But I haven't had any in likely 35 years. I'm sure makers have become more sophisticated since then. Then again I think Tequila is as unpleasant straight. Bourbon I didn't like to ruin by adding anything.
But... Have you heard, what's the word...

My grandmother lived in North Wilkesboro, NC. It is a beautiful area, but funny things are in the hills, including stills. Or were when I was a kid..
