Thunderbird Club

When I was building custom cabs, we offered a 215 with the same drivers as this new Mesa 215. Our cab was very popular amongst a certain crowd of players. I will say, I like the form factor of the Mesa a bit more. Ours was tall, wide and shallow, whereas the Mesa is short, narrow and deep. It’s a much bigger sounding cab than its size would suggest. The Faital 15PR400 is like the very best vintage 15 you ever heard ‘back in the day,’ but handles way more power and extends lower AND higher. It’s a remarkable speaker. My DIY ‘1822’ cab uses a very similar Faital 18” speaker with two 2” mid drivers in a sealed cab and it’s my favorite cab I’ve ever made. I sold like 5 or 6 of em. The combo of an 18” driver in a sealed enclosure brought up too many preconceived notions so I could barely give em away. Too bad. That had so much punch and great off axis dispersion. Oh well! For now, if you want that classic vintage vibe but with massively improved power handling and frequency range, the Mesa SW215 is very tough to beat. The Berg NV412 is also seriously underrated if you don’t mind the schlep :)

Haha! Naw, just tons of blue light and a fog machine :)
great post, curious about that 1822 design, could you please point me to a link? are those Faital drivers NEO?

Gosh, I’ll try to think of where I can point you on that cab. I stopped selling them about 5 years ago, due to lack of interest. The small handful of folks (including me) that got one absolutely love that cab.
The Faital’s are Neo. There are quite a few great Neo options these days, but the Faital 15’s and 18’s are the best I’ve heard.

no need for a link if a hassle, was wondering if you sold the design as well as DIY would imply?

I’d be happy to provide you with specs, dimensions and parts list for free. I also have some crossovers already built up if you want one. It’s very simple, just need to be prepared to put in a ton of internal bracing!

Some pics in different lighting for @GBassNorth.

Absolutely exactly what I needed to see! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
My observations - the new bird is a real chameleon. Looks lighter than PB in some lights and darker in others. It also looks like it takes on a green hue in some lighting situations. It’s a beautiful color and I like it better than standard PB. Now I’m really torn, blue or green? I know, I know - one of each. ;)

Plenty of time for @dagrev to get out and hustle lawn jobs, wash cars, collect recyclables, babysit and get a paper route (do those still exist).
I think there is still some lemonade stand season left...

The neighbor's teenager is currently staining our fence. It is his first job ever.
Did he wear you down with idle chatter until you agreed?

Oh my, there’s only one enabling answer.
Both.

You're about my age and know full well kids don't do any of those things we likely all did. So I'd be in competition with others trying to feed their family or habit. I could go back into being an undocumented pharmaceutical sales rep, but there are certain mitigating factors I now consider, despite the quick money.

While I’m waiting on my Thunderbird to come back from the shop, what strings are club members typically running on their particular basses? My shop asked if I wanted a setup and new strings put on, so I’m having them put on a set of DR Lowriders to try. Thoughts?
I ended up with GHS Precision Flats on my modern Thunderbird. What kind of tone are you shooting for? That might narrow down and focus the answers a bit.

I’m not sad my Inverness Green won’t match my car, the blue might match better but I don’t want a bunch of basses too close in color.

I use the cheapest, skinniest, most readily available roundwounds on my fretless basses. That happens to be Ernie Ball extra slinkies. 40-95

Fretted basses was a more expensive proposition, I tried many brands of flatwounds, and my runaway favorite are the Pyramid Golds. 40-105

and I never change strings, never, ever. unless I break one…
