Thunderbird Club

wonder if that pickup is worth more than the illegal piece of mahogany it replaced.....:cautious:
prolly not....

That bass looks great. There's something with the '51/Tele -style basses and two humbuckers in Jazz/T-Bird area. Ever since I saw this pic in a "Heavy Rock" book (a collection of articles from 70's Finnish music magazine) I was hooked even if I wasn't quite sure what bass it was, never mind the player. (It's John Sauter playing with Ted Nugent, still don't know what the pickups are...).

I always wanted a Sunn Coliseum when I was a young whippersnapper.

I've never had a Stingray in my hands - it became thee bass in the '80s played by so many great players, maybe especially Tony Levin. Leo Fender was like Miles Davis - he just kept innovating over three separate companies/decades. In many ways, G&L was the culmination/pinnacle of all his best developments.

I went to E.U. Wurlitzers in Boston to buy a Rickenbacker with my guitarist in 1977, he wanted me to buy the then fairly new Musicman Stingray, my mind was already made up though, I walked out with my first 4001. I've still never owned one.

I’ve always looked at it a bit differently. I’ll spend as much on as bass as I think I can get out of it if I ever decide to sell. So getting a great deal on a Tbird gives me that much more money I can spend on it to make it even better or to personalize it.

It seems to me that bass finishing has gotten more expensive over the last year or two. The finish job on the BlingBird was top notch but cost about $750. Pat Wilkins dose some of the best work in the business, so I didn’t mind paying a premium and would absolutely go back there again. The holoflash finishes on that website look great and are pretty much in line cost wise with other places I looked. I was considering the red holoflash on my next build or mod.

The finishes on both my new Thunderbirds were beautiful, best paint jobs I've ever seen.

Say no more! I have wanted a Coliseum too and especially that old first version. I blame Entwistle.
At least I had a good sense to buy the 1977 Hiwatt DR103 in 1997 for a fraction of a price they go now. And when I started to look for an old cheap but reliable solid state head as a spare I initially thought I'd end up with a Peavey Mark III or IV or similar (not that there's anything wrong with those) but eventually got a Lab Series L2 for a ridiculous price. Now I have another L2 and an L4 too. Superb amps, they have never let me down tone- or volumewise.

Yeah, I can't stand his personality. I do like his playing, and admit I'm kind of amused when talks and makes people need Valium and Depends.:D He's certainly not alone in musicians that are obnoxious. There's a long list!

He's a great player though, I saw him on the David Letterman show years ago, he played with the band, he gets a great sound live especially in a little place like the Ed Sullivan theatre, he was definitely loud though. But I like it as long as the amp isn't aimed at my ears.
