Double Bass Time for a Dead Spiros Club

I've had the same Spiro Mittel ADG strings on my '70s German laminate for about 10 years. The E string from that set broke 3-4 years ago, onstage, on the final note of the final song of our set.

Maybe maybe not! I'm considering a new set in 6 months but maybe not. It depends on what I'm playing at the time. Also potentially trying other arco strings on top.
Well- I had a pair on my ply for about 30 years that I just switched out in January. Kept them just in case I want to go back....
Wow, just saw this thread for the 1st time. My reds are 10 years old this summer. Nice dark, thick tone, with loads of sustain. Wolfy around the Bb on the D. They stay in tune all night long. Great tone amped and unplugged. Hundreds upon hundreds of gigs. Purchased from Jerry at Lemur, who I still miss dearly.
(FWIW I have Chromes on my fretless slab that are probably 10yo and they sound equally killer. Last week I subbed with a 12-piece horn band with vibes and percussion- yep 3 drummers, horns, and 2 keyboards- so I brought a huge amp rig and the fretless. Gawd that was a fun gig)

Hi! My spiro lights changed dramatically since I put them on 3 weeks ago. It was a slightly used set from 3 years ago. Almost all of the brightness is gone... ***? Summer weather? High Humidity? I miss my tone :/
How old were they? I find humidity changes the tone down here in nola slightly but it changes spiros the least. Give it a little bit.
I don't know the age, I got them with the bass in the packaging from the previous owner. He used Weedwakckers mainly. (He was an electric player with a fully carved bass with freakin' Weedwakckers on it

I had the same thing happen with my spiro's this week. After playing an outdoor festival in beautiful warm weather for a few hours, my two month old set changed dramaticaly. Much darker, but als much looser feeling, i kind of like it actually, i guess they have broken in overnight being exposed the heat/humidy
Actually, I made them new with Fast Fret+Clean cloth...They stayed the same since than (I did it days ago).
Will see how it goes...

+1. I do this after students with acidic skin ph have played my office bass. Works well.
I also do the alcohol thing when my strings are getting dirty after long practice weeks or long gig weeks. I have to do that soon....

Put me in the club - I took off some Garbos which were old and sounding too dull and dark, and put on some old, used Spiro solos for the E/A/D with a plain gut G. They sounded a little bright and ringy at first, but after a couple of gigs they have settled in to a warm, clear sound that has woken my bass (and my playing) up a bit. The tension is just right as well.
