Time for a New Rig - Somewhat clueless, looking for a great versatile sound!

"Versatile, Portable, & Great Sound"

You don't say whether you're gigging or not, but the range of styles seems to me that you would be best off with a "portable" head and a speaker cabinet that will handle deep tones at higher volume. If that's the case, I'd suggest going with a cab other than two tens, in the event you find yourself needing to move more air.

IMO, the best bang for the buck would come from one of the G-K heads such as a 700RB III, or 1001 RB III. Or, you could go with the Markbass LMII or the new GK MB2 500, which are 6 & 4 lbs. respectively. A good tube tone can be dialed in based on my experience with both lines of amps.

As for speakers, I'd recommend a quality 4x10, 2x12, or a 15" rig with appropriate mid and tweeter. Lots of em' out there (used and new), and you would need to choose these using your own ears. After all, the speaker cab is actually the "voice" of your rig.

Happy hunting!

I'll tell you what I have: I use a Genz Benz shuttle 6.0 with two Bag End S15D cabinets. The whole rig cost me about $1300, but I bought one of the cabinets and the amp new.
I only tell you what I have because I think it is very good and it fits your price range. My cabinets don't have tweeters in them and I don't think I need any, it is a very full and musical sound. Like someone else said, the list of good gear is endless nowadays, just try stuff and get what you like. In my case, I bought my rig without trying anything first, only following the advice of TB, and I don't regret that decision one bit :)
