I have a question about using "timeless timber" for bridges and sound posts. This is the wood that is being mined from the bottom of the great lakes and is touted to be the best old wood available. It is commonly used in banjo rims and has become all the rage for that vintage sound in banjos. I also understand it is highly prized for making violins...but my questions is...are any luthier using this aged wood for bridges or sound post on basses? I was in a discussion this weekend and was told this wood is being used to greatly improve the sound of vintage basses. I am a bit skeptic, old wood is good when it is used properly AND expertly fit. Most basses sound better with just a good set up, is the expense really worth it for this rare and pricey wood?
