Timothy B Schmit again!

I never get tired of listening to the Eagles or their bass player. In fact, I am going to see them live in Portland Oregon this summer. I am so excited to finally get to see Timothy live. Great tone and solid fundamentals. You pop and slap guys can talk down on me all you want, but you could play a life time of gigs without ever having to pop and slap.(unless you are in a funk band). Simple good sounding four string bass like Tim's is really all that is needed. That is why Timothy and Roger Waters have been my favorite bassists for years. They get the job done. It might not be flashy and it might not be a hundred miles an hour, but it works and that is all I strive for.

Why the 'us and them' mentality? You know it's possible to like more than one kind of bass playing?

Life in the Fast Lane and most of the tracks off Hotel California have really cool basslines, I always thought! Although that was Randy Meisner, not Timothy Schmidt, right?

I seriously doubt if anyone thinks Eagles songs would be improved with Larry Graham or Victor Wooten licks. Meisner or Schmidt, their music was great with basslines they played.

I guess your right Alex. It doesn't need to be an either or proposition. You would think a floyd freak such as myself would recognize the us and them mentality. lol. It's probably because other bass players treat me inferior because I don't play slap and pop. At any rate, my preference is the simple good sounding stuff.

Timothy B. replaced Meisner in Poco when the Eagles formed.
Timothy was the only guy for the job when Randy left the Eagles too.

So I guess you could say Timothy B. made his career on replacing Randy Meisner.

It was the vocal similarities. Both great players and high register singers.

And yet at the same time, in other parts of Talkbass, those of us who do slap often get called childish show-offs who are stuck in the 80s. Bassists are a weirdly close-minded bunch

Either way, jealous you get to see the Eagles live!

I am a bass player who is also a "high tenor" singer. I appreciate and admire both Timothy B Schmit and Michael Anthony (both underrated bassists who have killer vocals)

I don't know what it is but Schmidt's sound just blows me away. Maybe it is the context of the music but have always loved his sound in the Eagles.
