Tips More Efficient Thumb Position: Slap

Alright, so I'm pretty natural at slap bass for the amount of time I've been playing (8 months). I slap with my hand angled more downward. Not as dramatically down as flea, but its definitely not the thumbs up type look like Buddha Dickens. So I was fortunate enough to play bass with a real expert (hes played with some very famous bands and performers), and he slaps incredibly well.

He told me that I should turn my thumb upwards, but when I try it, I can about 70% of the time get a deep resonant sound, as opposed to leaving my wrist downward with thumb pointing downard, where I can get a deep tone about 98% of the time. I've been trying to practice it a lot at home to try to get my thumb to be bouncy, and also make a sounding tone instead of just clanking.

My question is: Is it worth it to sort of evolve my slap technique to fit that thumbs up look. I've found it near impossible to get the triplet pluck done efficiently when I have my thumb pointed veyr upwards like that, but I also think the thumbs up technique looks more cool, and its also helpful in that I play a 5 string, and putting my hand in that manner means I don't have to rest my arm on the strings as much, and there wont be as much B string clanking.

So any tips on thumbs up slapping? Should I just keep on and get passed that the learning curve? Like does slapping in the thumbs up way open doors to new slapping possibilities? Thanks for any tips
