Anybody check the transcription of this song in the latest Bass Player? When I was in college I probably lost a point from my overall GPA from the time I spent playing this song and everything else from Narada Michael Walden's Dance of Life album!

TM Stevens reminded me of Bernard Edwards, whose playing I have always loved. TM says he recorded that song using a Yamaha BB3000 and an Ampeg B-15.

I don't know much about TM Stevens, but his playing on the Steve Vai album Sex & Religion blew my mind. Also, Narada Micheal Walden was amazing on Robert Fripps solo album Exposure. His drumming was out there, on the track Breathless (along with Tony Levin on bass). I'll have to check out more of both these artists. Thanks!

This material by Walden and Stevens was commercial pop/disco/funk, sort a harder edged version Chic.

Breathless has to be one of the most amazing performances from the entire prog/fusion canon.

Someone told me TM Stevens played with John McLaughlin, anyone know when that was?

This was another huge hit Narada Michael Walden produced around that time, for Stacy Lattisaw back in 1980. The bassist sounds like TM Stevens (I’m pretty sure it was a PJ and Stevens was using Yamaha BB3000 back then,) but the album lists TM, Bernard Edwards, and Randy Jackson as bassists. This bass line was not quite as out front as I Should Have Loved Ya, but it was just as funky.

Very sad indeed. Another timeless great that unfortunately, time has caught with, as it will with all of us.

I wake up thankful to still be working and playing at 65. It's not getting easier, but so far, so good. Memories of TM, Anthony Jackson, and Michael Rhodes (R.I.P), among so, so many others, keep us alive in our hearts.

5 year old news too. Anyone heard anything more recent?

A dear friend of mine, who was in the very first band I ever formed as a wee teenager, just passed away from complications due to early onset Alzheimer’s. It’s so sad to see people suffering like that. I hope TM is in a good place, with good care.

My best friend’s wife died of early dementia in her mid fifties. It broke him and he died a few years later. Life can be rough.
