On the gig yesterday the sax player/leader -- a knowledgeable guy whose opinion definitely ain't worthless -- said something I think I've heard before but really didn't pay attention to. Bird did some serious shedding with half-speeding a portable record player, learning other guys' lines -- that's pretty well known, I think. But we were talking about Lester Young and my man said Bird told a guy that a lot of his "new sound" was Prez but twice as fast as normal, that this was a product of all that Prez-shedding and how deep it got into him. My man (who has been known to go very deep into the shed himself, sometimes maniacally so) said he had actually done some of this -- listening to Prez twice as fast, listening to Bird at half-speed -- and found a lot of truth in it.

Obviously from the second-handedness of that first paragraph, I haven't done the transcriptions and analysis myself.
