To Buy or Not to Buy

Hello everyone,
I have recently decided that I want to replace my buzzy, boring, blah ibanez gsr-200. I have played a bunch of basses for the past few months and really like nicer Ibanez basses. I ran across this one and don't know anything about it. It looks beautiful and the price is right.

Please feel free to add your two cents as to which basses I ought to consider...budget is sub $500.

Very cool bass. BUT dont expect it to play anything like a soundgear.
Those ibanez basses were sort of their answer to the jackson concert basses.
Most commonly they were played with a pic and have a somewhat flat tone to them.

The soundgear is a VERY different bass. If you enjoyed your previous ibanez enough to want another Id suggest looking at an SR300 which is in the same price range.... or if you look used you might be able to get a little bit higher of a model.

I am looking at it because of the fact that it is inexpensive. I was looking at an SR-500 because the neck played beautifully. I actually dislike my gsr-200 though, quite a bit.

$500 isn't really "inexpensive". You can buy some pretty fantastic gear at that price.

I wouldn't bother with that dated-looking Ibanez on ebay. Not at that price, anyway. The appeal of that bass is it's retro styling, which is an acquired taste, to say the least.

I'd be hesitant to recommend anything to you if you're fussy about the neck. You really have to find out what you like first, and then look on the used market. But $500.... that will get you into something really nice. Especially these days.

If you werent nuts about the soundgear neck you should check out Peavey or Schecter. Both offer great basses in your pricerange

I guess what I am looking for is something with a richer tone. I liked the way the sr-500 sounded but I am open to something else. My bass now is just so rough to play. It sounds gross.

Ibanez Soundgear
Ibanez ATK
Peavey Millenium
Peavey Grind
Schechter---anything

Check out the models that are in your price range.
Although you arent crazy about playing your current soundgear you might like the higher end ones.

SR800s were made in Japan and are also in the $200 range, they're really great basses for that price.
Also, I love RoadStarIIs, find an early '80s RoadStar and you won't be dissapointed. Those are pretty cheap too, mine is a RD924 that has a square P type pickup at the neck and a 3way soapbar at the bridge, -it's so cool, and I imagine you could find one for less than $350.

I have a 707 and absolutely love it. In fact, it looked exactly like the one you listed from eBay before I had a custom 80's/90's paint job put on it. You might be able to find them less expensive, but don't be afraid to pick one up.
