I am building a hollow body kit, think Gretsch 5440. With the trapeze tailpiece and floating bridge is it nessessary to ground strings? The wiring diagrams for Gretsch 4 pot 2 pickup hollowbodies don't show one (I think).

In the case of a floating wooden bridge on an archtop, it would typically be the tailpiece that's grounded, often at the strap pin on a semi-hollow.
This probably won't be easy, but you'll need to run a wire to the strap pin that's holding the tailpiece on:
Depending on how the strings pass through the body you might be able to have them pass through a metal plate retainer that IS grounded.
You definitely need to ground this.
As others have said, you need to get a ground wire to the tailpiece/endpin. Let us know how that build goes - with pictures please!
Yes, you need to ground the strings, like its already been stated here you need a grounding wire that is connected to the tail piece
Take off the tailpiece, drill a small diameter hole through the bottom of the body near where the strap button is. Feed a ground wire through the hole and fish it through the body where you can grab it. Make sure there are a few inches outside of the body. Solder the ground wire to the existing ground. Back at the strap button, secure the ground wire to the tailpiece. Put the strap button back in place. Hope this helps.
