Do it, make that bass your own! i did a wee thread myself over on luthiers corner about stripping with Nitromors craft and repainting (search there for "project olp/ green meanie" for some photos) and it worked out fine- nay better than fine and i really enjoyed it.
a yamaha wont have any special nitro finish that should present any problems and if it sounds and plays good you should stick with it. I dont like silver and grey finishes either
