Toadworks Phantasm Phaser?

Imagine two simultaneous sine waves, overlapping each other. At a narrow "width" they are close together, nearly identical; at a wider width they are farther apart, more obviously two different waves, with a greater degree of phase between them.

Actually, that's not quite correct, but you're close. Visualize it this way:

Take those two overlapping sine waves, and match them up perfectly - they are in phase.

Now shift one of the signals to the left, horizontally along the X axis. The X axis represents time, so you're actually shifting the signal backward through time - as a practical matter, we achieve this by delaying the signal.

The net effect of the delay is that the signals are out of phase. The longer the delay (the farther to the left you shift the signal) , the greater the phase offset. (THIS is why more stages is, in theory, better - the more stages, the longer the available phase offset. What most people don't realize is that, across different designs, the length of the delay per stage is not the same - to a large degree, this means that the actual number of stages is meaningless - the desirable characteristic is a longer delay, and therefore a greater maximum offset).

The maximum offset corresponds to the maximum delay time. For the sake of easy visualization, let's assume the maximum offset for our theoretical phaser is 360 degrees. What most phaser designs do is to set the offset signal at 50% of the maximum offset - in this case, 180 degrees - and then shift the offset signal back and forth along the X axis - in other words, speeding the signal up to the point that is (very nearly) back in phase with the original signal, and then delaying the offest signal to the point where it is 360 degrees out of phase.

This is repeated, and the rate of back-and-forth shift is controlled by the LFO.

Now, what the Width control does is limit how far in each direction the offset signal is shifted - but this is all based on a center offset of 180 degrees.

What makes Phantasm so versatile is that the Axis control allows you to reposition that centerpoint for the offset, and it's designed so that if you dime it either direction.

What I'm wondering, though, is 'can I get the cool intermod-growl from the Squishy, like I do with the CS-3?'.

I'll be interested to hear Toad's answer; speaking from my experience, you can get some clipping at certain settings, as well as some other interesting artifacts- but it doesn't have the same "flavor" as the clipping of the CS-3. More buzzy, less growly, IMO.

Mr. Squishy was designed to be quiet, clean and clear. I suppose you could make iut malfunction in any number of ways, but it wasn't designed to distort the signal - quite the opposite - so I can't really advise you on it's growly properties :)

the thing's big and orange, perfect for my multicolored monster sized FX board. And it looks kinda funky too:)

The clips have had me intrigued for a while now, the Subdecay Quasar isn't cutting it for me anymore. This seems like its got more swirl and swish going on.

I want liquidy slurpy wet funky phasing baby:D
