Tom Petty's "Mojo"

My mini-review (FB post):

Tom Petty's new "Mojo" the Heartbreakers' first in 8 years: Appealing retro-rock/Americana textures - the jingle jangle, the roots and grooves, the pleading vocals. Mike Campbell wails. Benmont Tench swells. Ron Blair (bass) and Steve Ferrone (drums) drive it hard. Fenders, Gibsons, Ricks, circa '60s and '50s. Freedom Rock, but not the bad kind.
Hogtown boy makes good, again.

.....so, I'm liking it, quite a bit, although I have yet to really warm up to the songs. I have a soft spot for Petty, but I don't think any of these songs are as good as his best. Campbell sounds better than ever, though, and T.P. finally gives him space to unwind, something he routinely does at the shows.

always knew these guys were gear heads - liner notes list details of the instruments used.

Basses: Blair used a 1965 Fender Jazz on 4 tracks, a '59 P bass on most of the other tracks, and a Kay upright on one track. Petty used a Hofner Club Bass on one track.

yeah, i'm enjoying this record. there are some LZ style grooves and riffs here. To me it sounds fresh and fun and a bit jammy. i saw them on tour a few weeks ago at red rocks and it was really fantastic. They bring the hits man.....plus about 5 songs from the new record. I havent listened to the whole thing yet, but i'm digging the first 1/2. As mentioned above mike campbell wails....he wailed the whole concert, too....great player.

Really don't care for the new album. Sounds like they put zero effort into it. Hopefully something good will come of it when played live.

I like Tom Petty's music, but I have not gotten the new CD yet,. You guys have motivated me thanks.
