I don't play in a band (still trying to get with one - have two leads now - but not too many opportunities in my town). But I write and record stuff instead.
Since I do this at home, I always have used DI and have 100's of amp models from various software. Bass tone is something I've always struggled with. So now I have a GK amp, and using its DI gives that extra mojo to tracks that's been missing! I added a little compression and another Waves plugin (MaxBass) to have it cut through the mix more.
I think I still need to dial in the tone better. Here's two quick demo recordings in my new instrumental - one using my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and one using my $179 Ibanez. I think the jazz needs to be a little toned down on the bridge PUP??? The Ibanez seems to give a more rounder tone with less punch. But of course, my old ears don't hear bass frequencies all that great anyway. Any input/suggestions appreciated. I did these before work this morning, so they aren't the final versions - may be some playing errors.

To save you time, bass comes in around 0:40, and can be heard better probably at 2:00 during the guitar solo. Thanks.
