Tone difference (samples?) - AVRI 57 vs. 61 P?

Apologies again, I am on a GAS induced procrastination rampage today. There aren't either of these basses anywhere near me, so talkbass reviews are all I have to go on.

What I'm looking for is that warm, thumpy sounding P bass without any clanky/gridininess to the tone. To my eyes, the white blonde ash 57 P is the bees knees. However, I've read reports on the 57p being a little thin sounding and much brighter than the 62. My question: with a good set of flats, will the 57 produce that classic thumpy sound without having to roll off the tone or will the ash/maple board effect it?

If anyone has a 57P, I'd love to hear what it sounds like straight into garage band without any effects added.

Are you able to try a roadworn? I haven't played either the 57 or 62 so I can't comment on them, but my roadworn sounds pretty much exactly as you're describing.

I have both albeit the 62 is a fullerton era 84,very very light and airy, while the 57 is a 1996, 8.7 pounds and a little different. First i had flats on the 57 but when i bought the 62 it sounded compressed in comparison,kind of dead actually,so now i use my 62 with flats and the 57 with rounds. Sounds good! Mine seem to be very different in sound but i think it is because of one being the fullerton with the comfy neck and light weight..but maybe i'm wrong.

You can find good audio samples at the thomann cyberstore,just google it. The 57 sounds snapier and more aggresive there, but they only have the white (ash) on sale. The 2 tone sunburst version with alder might sound a little different.

The 57 is nowhere thin, the sound is big and huge.
Maybe the white Ash is a bit brighter than the sunburst Alder, but in a mix there is a little, if any, difference.

Get what you like best, or the better deal you can find.
It could be a 57 or 62, you'll be happy either way.

Same here... You'd think Austin Texas would be a perfect spot for all of these vintage models, what with all the country, blues, classic rock bands around. It drives me nuts. Neither mom and pops nor corporate stores stock these models in Austin.

The 57 in general is as fat as the 62. Individual basses will vary a little.

Current 62 and 57 basses are exactly the same with the exception of the fretboard. The 57 can do exactly what you want with a set of flats.

My '57 P AVRI had a heavy ash body (translucent white) and it sounded very thin. It was the last bass I bought on ebay, but I learned my lesson on trying before buying. I dumped it.
