Tone from head or cab

Does the flavour come from the salt or the pepper you put on your meal?

I like to think of tone in much the same way I think of cooking...perhaps because I'm greedy.

I don't buy into the "tone is all in the fingers" lark. Think of the fingers as your steak, and your bass/amp/cab as seasoning with which you can alter it to your own personal tastes.

My ideal setup for the sound I'm getting is primarily from my bass and the way I play, and is just amplified so that everyone can hear it.

If I can't hear my bass or the way I play, then I have the wrong cab and head.

I don't think tone can come from your fingers. My fingers don't sound like anything, and as long as your technique is adequate, all people's fingers can sound the same.
