Tone from head or cab

Does the flavour come from the salt or the pepper you put on your meal?

I like to think of tone in much the same way I think of cooking...perhaps because I'm greedy.

I don't buy into the "tone is all in the fingers" lark. Think of the fingers as your steak, and your bass/amp/cab as seasoning with which you can alter it to your own personal tastes.

Damn I'm hungry.
 
My ideal setup for the sound I'm getting is primarily from my bass and the way I play, and is just amplified so that everyone can hear it. :)

If I can't hear my bass or the way I play, then I have the wrong cab and head.
