First I would like to say that I am new to this site and new to the double bass. I have been playing electric for 33 years and I have finally decided to transition to the double.
I am finding that I am loving the challenge and especially the development opportunities it is offering me.
Now I have a question about some basses I am currently looking at. The string store has 4 Moretti fully carved uprights, and I have played them all for hours.
The bass that sounds the best with good volume, projection and evenness across all 4 string and registers is also the one I liked the least both the way it feels in my hands and aesthetically.
Of the 3 remaining, the one I liked the best had a dramatic difference in tone and volume on the E string. The G, D and A all had respectable volume (still not as loud as the one first) and a nice warm sound.
So I don't know enough about the double bass, but is it possible that a good luthier could work on the bass I like and get the volume and tone on the E sounding like the G, D and A? I would guess that it would depend on what is wrong, but for just the E to have the issue I would think something could be done.
Anyway, I will put my ignorance back in its case now.
