What type of tonewood do you suppose this bassist is using to achieve this fat acoustic growl. Bonus points if you can tell me what that cup instrument is made of.

My best guess is the fat acoustic growl you speak of is the result of a bass bridge and old bass strings having been put on an acoustic guitar. I really don't think tone wood is a factor.
He's sound a LOT better if he just slapped some Fralin's in it. It's all in the pickups, you know.

Dude is CRUSHING it on the bow-cup. I occasionally think about making something like that in a bass version as well. But naturally, I end up over thinking it and moving on to other projects without even starting. One of these days....
There is a guy in town here with a washtub bass that utilizes a piece of PVC pipe as a sort of "fretting" tube and after seeing him play, it just makes my head spin. Dude is like the Victor Wooten of washtub, or something.
