This might be an example. You could argue they're starting on the flat 7 of E....but you could just as easily argue that the D is the root of a different chord.

Not sure what you consider "rhythmic" but jazz bass lines are full of starting on non-root tones. In general, starting out on non-root tones make the line more melodic.

If you mean ostinatos (one or two bar repeating patterns), yes, straying from the root is not very common. Check out riff based blues/rock like Albert King's Born Under A Bad Sign and Oh Pretty Woman, Cream's Spoonful and early Howling Wolf tunes. What's common in those lines (like the reggae line mentioned above) is they land on the one at the end of the riff rather than at the beginning.

Working out your owen arpeggio exercises like angryclown5 wrote out will also open your ears to what's possible.

Here's an example of "not banging on the one" in a real world environment. Or surreal world, since it's NAMM.

Anyway, the chords are Gmaj - D7 - Emin - Cmaj

You'll notice about halfway I start landing on the third (F#) of the D chord on the one, mainly because it adds a more lyrical context. I think once or twice I also land on the fifth (B) of the Emin chord, using the fifth from the D7 chord to move up. Either way, here you go.

I do. I normally play either right over the bridge pickup or just past the neck on 4 string basses, so it doesn't get in the way. Plus, I like the aesthetics of it.

Oh, I did (and think still do, as I don't think you ever answered my question). In a public forum like this when you have representatives from music companies as well as endorsing artists - all of whom have to publicly declare their affiliations - it's a natural assumption.
