Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

I hate hate hate necro'ing threads, but, I probably haven't played my bass in almost 6 months (aside from a quick reunion show last month) and really haven't listened to Tool in about a year.
I have to say, the magic is still there every time I put any of their records in. I think 10,000 Days is still my favorite, just with the writing, production, mixing, mastering, all of it. Yes it's not as "complete" as Aenima or Lateralus, but the actual songs are twice or three times as long and are a journey in and of themselves.

All that to say, I can't believe I sold my Wal in 2009 lol. I even had 2 at that point- my MkI 4 and my MkII 5. Oh well.

And, I think I'm going to get a GT-2 again, but I need to pair it with a GEB7 or something comparable. When I had mine last time, it was just too much low-end loss live, which if you listen to most live recordings, when that's on, Adam is filling up a TON of bass, so it works. Anyone else had this issue with that pedal? I love the sound it gives, there really is nothing like it, it just sounds too thin to me. Dat second verse in "Jambi"... just omg.

Did you mean Justin? Also keep in mind that Chancellor will run a clean and a dirty rig together live. So he has a full bottomed, unaffected signal still going. I cannot comment on the GT-2 personally though

Nah I meant Adam lol. He's using two Diezels (plus his Superbass rig) and one of them runs to a Mesa PH215 cab, and when you listen to soundboard stuff you can really hear the chunk/thump from his rig when JC kicks on his fuzzes and other stuff. I notice when the GT-2 and fuzzes kick on the bottom can drop out somewhat often. I know he does run the tri-rig and fills up some bass, I just meant with how tight they play, there's a lot of the drums and guitar that adds to the punch of the "bass" sound live in addition to him. It doesn't come across on the records as clearly.

Ah okay, now I understand what you meant in your first post. Just make sure you play with a baritone guitarist who can compensate for you next time ;). On a serious note, you can look into possibly using a blender so you don't lose all of your bottom end throughout your signal. Or you can look into other tube emulators that will get you the same sound. I'm not sure that boosting lost bass with an equalizer will sound quite as good or have as much impact as your raw signal, but again no personal experience. You can always try it

Haha yeah if I were in JC's position, I'd be bff's with my guitarist too! I think besides Jerry Cantrell, Adam would be about my favorite guy to jam with. He makes it all look so easy and his timing and technique is flawless.
I'm going to try and nab a GT-2 and see how it sounds with my current rig. Last time I had it, it sounded great in rehearsal, but live against two guitarists it got lost and was kinda clanky. Also I was in drop C, with some pretty serious strings, so I know that has some to do with it. A blender is probably a better idea now that you say it. Do you have any recommendations?

Awesome, thanks!
I have a question, though- if you think a blender would be a better alternative over an EQ, why do you think JC runs his RAT with a full-time EQ in that loop? Just because it's always on, or? That's what made me look to the GEB7 firstly.

Different people have different outlooks on their tone and how they want it to sound. I say blender because, for me personally, I rather have my clean low end mixed in, rather than a distorted low end boosted. It could just be that he likes the sound in its entirety running through the rat and doesn't mind trying to make up for the loss of lows. Personally, I try to get full range pedals so I don't have to deal with it. It's all about your own taste ;). That's why I say that you can certainly try it an EQ pedal. Just offering another idea.

EDIT: Also, there are many other EQ options available. No personal experience, but from what I hear the boss pedal is somewhat mediocre. The Source Audio programmable EQ (with savable presets) and Whirlwind bass EQ are some other options to check out as well. They get lots of love here

I wouldn't doubt it. I can only imagine that, even when running two legit channels like that, they've still got to fit together sonically to really make it worth it to use two amps. And he shaging does. dat cleantone.

Yeah I totally get that and I appreciate the input. I've tried the GEB7 with an Analogman TS9DLX before and it sounded great together. It didn't totally change the character of the pedal, but it definitely helped in making sound more full, whereas most TS types and their variants are crap for bass because of the total bass loss but sound great over the top. The blend makes more sense, as I've had that feature on a few pedals and still lets you retain the OD character just with more bass.

Here's my setup:

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Quick walkthrough:

Bass goes in the switcher, then the loops are:
Tremolo
Whammy
Gt-2
chorus&flanger
Delay
Envelope filter
Fuzz
Wah

The output of the switcher goes to the tuner which splits the signal - clean to first amp, second one to RAT & EQ then to second amp (or to console with sansamp paradriver shaping)

I keep an open eye for a FOXX Fuzz Wah with a decent price but nothing came up yet

Very nicely executed! Im diggin it. It looks identical just about to his setup they post in most places. It makes me wonder if his setup has changed at all in the last 8 years since their last release. Awesome setup through for sure. What amps and preamps/cabs are you running??

Thanks!

I'm using the Gallien 400RB (not the 400RB-IV, just the old one - liked it better than any of the new ones). In between cabs at the moment as I've relocated to a new country recently :)
