Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

Thought some of you might be interested in seeing that Toolmybass's source was good on the pick choice of J.C.

Hey good one! My first pick (stage used one from a NJ show) was a pretty good source I think ;)

It would make sense he would use a somewhat clean overdrive to emulate live what the producer does on the studio. When he plays heavier riffs his bass sounds more agressive;that is obviously technique, but on the studio, the mixer can choose when to kick in more clean or more dirt.Live, or he has someone paying attention and constantly mixing the signals to taste, or he could boost with slight overdrive to get a bit more of edge out of it.
By the way, I have build one of those pedals recently. It's a pitty I sold it and didn't have the chance to try it with my bass rig.

Not too sure what you mean by this. Do you have an example?

The aggressive studio sound your hearing comes from his bass mostly.......also the type of speakers he uses/mic placement etc
edit:there is a couple of spots in certain tunes off the 10,000 Days album that Joe (producer) describes using the distortion/OD circuit in his GK2001 head eg:bridge in Right in Two

Where does he describe this?

Im sorry I shouldve asked more specifically. I was hoping to maybe get a link or something. Im obsessive over things such as this since my band is currently self producing our album and I enjoy gaining insight into all my favorite records "studio magic" :)

Sorry, no link.
It was in one of those special magazine editions that was Tool based. Not sure if it was Revolver, but it was along those lines.

I like this statement. I just picked up a Diesel Dawg clone from a fellow TB'r and it rocks! I tried it at practice last night at higher volumes and it rocked!! I wonder just how close it is to the built in dist on the 2001. It supposed to be. I believe this DD will be staying on my board for quite some time.

I started seeing a couple guys put them in smaller boxes this last year and I thought it was a great idea considering the fact that the original is in a huge box for no real reason. Asked a TB'r if he'd build me one after I saw the one he built. He sold me his. Im really happy I asked him about it. Great dirt pedal.

I did a rehouse of one that I just got for xmas from the lady. Such a stupid huge box. Its easy to do yourself but be careful with measurements and it helps to have a drill press obviously. I ruined the first box and ordered another. The enclosure I used was a 1590c. Ill try to get a pic up here sometime soon. I love the sound of that pedal. Its really the most beautiful harmonically rich and crystal clear distortion ive ever used BUT my gripe is I have to have the volume nearly dimed to get unity and it still seems to drop in the mix of a band environment. It really could use some more retention of lows. Of course this could be from me using an active bass, though I dont know why...

The guy who built mine, vlad5, built it off of johnk's design. The volume is def fixed on mine. I actually don't get much past 10 o'clock at practice level. And that's loud. The low end retention is ALL there and it almost has a noise gate built into it. When I'm not playing, it's dead quiet. And like you said master, it's so harmonically rich. I really didn't know what I was missing with this pedal. It's a sleeper for sure. It's like johnK in his infinite pedal wisdom took an already awesome pedal and made it phenomenal.
