Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

do you think I can use a pedal with two outputs as a splitter?

If running a dirty channel and a clean one.....No

but if I can make it work, can I give up the JD7?

Yes

"always on" pedals are eq and Rat. (not the DD)

Thanks man!
Still not that cheap.. how about one of these?:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RADIAL-BIGS...466?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item35c8d33892

How do you end up with 3 signals here (dry, clean, dirty) (I'm splitting one signal from the tuner itself, I think JC does the same) - and more important - If I don't have 2 amplifiers, can I use something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Signal-Flex-MM40-4-Channel-Electronics/dp/B000EENEPA
To mix the 3 signals into one?

Since it seems you will be running one amp there is no need to mix anything or have a "dry" channel.

Here is what you can do. Bass-->Clean Pedals-->Dirt/OD Pedals-->Head-->Cab = Done (ONE signal path)

Dont make it complicated on yourself by thinking you have to "mix/blend" anything unless your running a stereo set-up.

If you listen to my JC tone with a Wal video my signal path is exactly the way i listed it above. The only difference was that i mixed a D.I and a Mic'd cab for the audio recording.

Wouldn't the dirty pedals have too much influence on the overall sound in that case? Since the Turbo and the EQ are always on (and lowering the turbo level will lower the overall level)..
Also, when I turn some of the pedals on as they make too much of a change over the overall sound (like the chorus).. I guessed that mixed with some dirt and some clean, they will sound closer to the original.
Although I must say the tone sounds very good in your video

I dont know what exact pedals you are using....but you seem to re-question all of the answers you are getting.(in both threads) Your just going to have to experiment with the gear that you currently have and acquire in the future and make the best of what you have and your experience level.

I guess you're right.. :)

Sorry for the trouble, and I did get a lot of great information - so thanks for the help

No trouble. One last thing, if you havent already acquired a Rat pedal i'm going to save you some time and tell you NOT to get a Turbo. I have had 2 Turbo's (one normal and one big knob), 3 Rats (one normal, one with vintage chip and one with vintage chip but modified) and one Juggernaut.

The worst ones out of the bunch (for the purpose of a JC tone) was the Turbo's. I a/b'd the S%#T out of them for 2 months and tried to get the Turbos to "work" with what i wanted. I would bet the farm that JC's is heavily modified and the only one of mine that was close is the Rat II with the vintage chip and modified for bass frequencies and low end.

There isnt one video on the interwebs with someone using a Turbo Rat that sounds good (as far as a JC tone is concerned)

I hope this helps. All other info needed is right here in these two threads and on the Dunlop vid.

TMB

the first issue Turbo is a great pedal. if JC's were in fact modded, it would have been leaked years ago and somebody would be profiting bigtime off it, I doubt there's a secret conspiracy.
I could be wrong, you could be right and vice-versa

Leaked?...by who? Lol

His own tech didn't even know that the Tonebender he has is a re-issue.
He also screwed up in the video agreeing with interviewer that the over driver was part of the dirty channel.

Turbo Rat might be a good pedal for YOU...but an un-modded one is S#%T when it comes to JC tone.

TMB

Yeah, I agree with the Turbo issue. I ended having to go the boutique route in order to find the tone I was searching for. I did hang on to a turbo, though. They are great pedals.

As far as advice goes, TMB won't guide you wrong. A lot of guys in this thread really knew what they're talking about. But, the words of TMB and Vegas are almost holy scripture.

Good luck in your tone search.

Here is the current state of my pedalboard...havent played any Tool stuff in a cpl years and looking forward to jammin with the guys soon in anticipation of a new album (my guess around this time next year)
Have some wiring and soldering to do this week. But she should be singing soon!

My Radial Switchbone is underneath lid ;-)

This is my current setup. Still a little mess there with the cables.. :)

I split the signal using the tuner (connected to the output of the switcher) - one goes to the first amp, the other through the RAT and equalizer to the second (yep, using two amps now). I have two outputs on my guitar (Peavey B-Quad) so I use the second one to send a dry signal to the effects loop return of the amp, blending it with the dirty channel
Quite satisfied with the overall result!

Hey guys, I'm taking inspiration for my own board from some bass players, JC being on of them, and I have some practical questions maybe you guys can help.
Is his clean signal really clean or is the GT2 (almost) always on? I ask this because of my next question, my experience is Filter effects work better after distortion but JC has both the Flanger and the Envelope before most of the dirt.
Another question is, from what I understand the Rat is just there for a boost, the real Dirt comes from the amp right?

thanks

All the answers to your questions are in this thread;)
Happy reading!!

Hi all,
I'd like to get your opinion (sound/effects settings/playing) on my covers of some riffs, even if I know it's not 100% perfect :

10 intro riffs : Hush / Sober / H. / Forty Six & 2 / The Grudge / Schism / Disposition / Reflection / Vicarious / The Pot

video : http://youtu.be/YffeS9HKKOc
audio :

10 other great riffs : Opiate / Flood / Stinkfist / Hooker With A Penis / The Patient / Ticks and Leeches / Vicarious / Jambi / 10.000 Days / Rosetta Stoned

audio :

My tabs in .GP5 and .PDF here : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aqjae69sugtb4gy/3cHlcUbSYC

For info, I used my Wal MK2 into Compressor (EBS Multicomp) and light Overdrive (Darkglass B3K) on all tracks, and DI out of my Tech21 amp plugged into TC Electronics impact twin audio interface, plus :
- Distortion (Fuzzrocious Rat Tail custom) on "H."
- Flanger (Boss BF-2) on "Forty Six & 2" and "Jambi"
- Delay (Boss DD-3) on "The Grudge", "Disposition" and "Jambi"
- Octave Up Harmony (Digitech Bass Whammy) on "Vicarious"

Mark06, those clips all sound pretty much spot on to me! Nice job. I'm might have a suggestion on a few very picky minor details that probably very few people would even hear or notice (or, I'll admit that perhaps my interpretations could just be incorrect, LOL).

One thing that interests me is how you've got the tone settings, pickup selector, push/pull etc. on the Wal Bass, and what strings you're using, and whether you did any "post processing" of the bass tracks once they were recorded.

Thanks! Keep up the good work.

Thank you, but please give your suggestions (I know H., Disposition don't fit timing exactly and one of the last note for The Pot riff is wrong, lol, but the 10 intros were recorded one shot), no offense and I'm interested in !

1. My Wal settings were :
Volume : 8.5 (no pick attack/pushed)
Neck pickup : 9.5 (boost active/pulled)
Bridge pickup : 9 (boost active/pulled)
Pickups balance : nearly centered, only half a mark on neck pup side

2. The strings are Fodera Stainless Steel 45-105, not new but recent.
By the way I really like these (not too harsh for fingers, last quite longe) maybe more than my later Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky or DR Hi Beams. My next try will be DR DDT strings.
Note : Bought Fodera's from bassstringsonline.com, cheapest place including shipment, even from France (!)

3. Post processing through "Audacity" free software :
I normalised volume to -2dB level for each riff segment, then post compressed (from 3 to 6 dB depending on tracks) and of course lowered original tracks volume.
