Double Bass Top installation after difficult removal

I recently removed the top on a carved bass and it did not go as planned. It was my first time removing a top. I used a hot spatula and thought all the popping noise was the glue giving way but when I finally got the top off I realized it was mostly the top splintering and pieces of the top sticking to the ribs. The top had been removed previously and I think maybe white glue was used to glue the top back on. My question is now what? Do I leave the splinters in place, remove the splinters from the ribs and reglue them to the top or something different? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
