ok dumb question i see some guitars say they have say alder body with a flamed maple top. what is a maple top? dumb question i know

It's probably about 1/4 inch thick. On the top. So you can look at how pretty it is. The rest is alder.

The top is just the face, the side of the body facing away from you when you're playing. A maple top is usually just a veneer applied for appearance.
