Total Cell Phone Ban While Driving?

Laws help protect those who live near or around those with poor judgement. If everyone had good judgement we wouldn't need laws.

Or, in other words, I don't care if you want to participate in risky behavior. But if that behavior puts others at risk, it then becomes a concern. Or, if you want to drive and talk on your phone and end up in the hospital or morgue, I don't care. If you hurt me, someone I love, or another innocent person who just happens to be there, I care.

You are one unlucky dude, my sympathies. I'd think yours is probably a rare exception in the world or rear-enders. No offense, but I couldn't use your rare experience as a litmus test for all cell phone users.

They actually had no passengers. Just paying attention to the phone instead of the traffic in front of them. Yeah, I'm unlucky but given the prevalence of people using their phones while driving around here, it's almost inevitable.

I've been a passenger at times with drivers talking on their phones. They think they drive perfectly well when they're on the phone, too. :rolleyes:

You might as well say people driving puts people at risk. Ban driving.

It was a hypothetical using the stats from an early post.

I can't speak for them, only myself. If they are driving that poorly while talking on their cell, I have two questions:

Do you ever tell them they are unsafe drivers?

Why do you become a passenger in their unsafe vehicle?

Right. What are we going to do, appoint a Driving Distracted Czar to the president's cabinet? Where does banning distractions end?

The people who need to "ban distractions" are the individuals who find themselves distracted, not Big Brother.

Yes. That's how I know they believe they actually drive perfectly well while they're on the phone.

But seriously, we've made it this far without cell phone use killing off entire communities, and studies have shown that these kinds of bans do zero, nada, zilch to lower automobile accidents. Why should we willfully allow a law to pass that has already shown to do nothing? What good does it do besides make you pro-ban folks feel better about the road? Do you think all cell phone related accidents are going to suddenly be nonexistent?

Hey, how'd you know I drive a Suburban?

If you see me hitting one button on my cell phone and making a hands-free, voice-activated call that poses no greater distraction than a billboard as "cognitively impaired," I can't help you there.

But I think many "reasonable" people would disagree. It really feels like a stretch to me.

Id say no more or less than any other possible distraction on the road. Especially the new LED ones I see popping up here and there. Theyre only calling for the attention of the drivers on the road. In fact, I believe I remember an attempt to ban or regulate them at some point, possibly in the 90s, but I could be wrong.
