This is going to be my next project. I have a willow oak growing in the corner of my deck. The previous owners thought it a good idea to build the deck around the tree. I imagine that was a good idea at the time as it provides some nice shade during the hot summer months. The previous owners cut around the tree as it grew with a hand jigsaw and expanded the hole as needed. Now the tree is pressing up against support beams and it is slowly tearing the deck apart. The deck is not above 2' so I have been contemplating whether to tear it out or rebuild it. If I tore it out, I would have a slab poured and extend it out the full length of the house. However, my wife likes the deck so it's looking like it will be rebuilt and I may pour a slab or use flagstone to extend out to the other side of the house.

If it was at all possible, I'd keep the tree in the deck, that's such a cool looking idea.
