I've been thinking about starting a thread about yesterday's experience...tell me if you think that might be a good idea...
I went for an MRI...full-on, all the way inside the tube...95 minutes.
We're taking pictures in preparation for radiation...

IT WAS THE LOUDEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!!
For 40+ years I have been confident about telling folks that the loudest concert I've ever attended was the Steven Stills Band in Saratoga (NY) in the mid-70s. I've seen the Dead a dozen times...(the usual suspects) Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, and Sly & The Family Stone kicked my butt (and my eardrums)!
Yesterday's experience left those evenings in the dust...or maybe my ears are just That much further compromised...or maybe I'm just weaker than I was in 1975...
I swear to you...I bordered on vomiting all night...I couldn't read...I struggled with the TV remote...I dozed on and off from about 7p until about 2a before actually sleeping hard until about 7a.
The tech told me that the machine produces 99db. I think that's bullshirt.
I told him that the imaging center needs to step up and provide their patients better hearing protection.
I feel about 50% better this evening...not Nearly all the way back to plumb.
I believe I received a concussion.

I had a CT scan of my head last year, and it was really quiet. Just a few clicks and a quiet spinning thing.
I've had one or two. Nothing near as loud as what you're describing. That does not sound like fun. Pardon the pun

The loudest experience of my life was probably riding a motorcycle at 120 mph with no helmet or anything like an idiot. It probably sounded like an MRI, except way more fun.
When I had an MRI a year ago, they told me it produced up to 129dB. Having been partially in that tube for forty five minutes, I can say that seems about right.
For my weird personal information; that MRI was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of having an MRI done. The fact that I got $50 for it was a bonus!

I doubled up on my ear protection. Earplugs and over ear protection.
After the fact, I asked the Tech about bringing some sort of noise cancelling headphones with me if...GAWD FORBID...I ever had to do it again. He said absolutely no way... any kind of extraneous metal or plastic in the room would 'smudge' the pictures.
I call BS again.
It was so loud that I was amazed at the way my (silver) wedding ring vibrated on my finger.
I pointed out my ring to him as a walked into the room...he said 'No problem.'...
Since headphones contain magnets, and the MRI uses magnetic resonance imaging to create the picture, I'd advise against headphones. Also, they may pick up induced currents from the MRI machine.
No metal *on your head* with a head MRI, sorry. Wedding ring not a problem unless you wear it in your nose.
My last one was really loud, too, although I concede that since I already had a concussion, everything seemed really loud. I stuffed in my motorcycle custom-molded earplugs, then used their funny over-the-ear headphones stuffed with cotton. They offered to play some music for me, but that would have been way too much chaos especially since the MRI machine does its pattern in basically 7/4.
