Traben Chaos Core 5 Review

My CC5 Whiskey Burl is coming tomorrow! I got it at music123.com for $500, I would recommend buying basses from there because right now they have a promotion where you spend $500 or more and immediately get a $100 discount. Expect a full review.

I don't know much about Traben but those basses look sweet. I watched the demo on their site re: bigger bridge, bigger tone. Not a lot revealed in terms of range but, even so, the instrument does have a nice, fat sound.

Of course, if the look of the Chaos Core or other Traben models are too metal for you, there's always the Bootsy Star.

I just got my CC5 and here are some initial things:

The body and headstock actually do compliment eachother, because in person, the body isn't as oblong and "fat" as it appears in the pictures. Nice tone out of the aggie pre and rockfield pups. With the 5-way coil switching and 3 band eq, I can easily get a smooth, elegant tone suitable for jazz while a couple turns later, I can get a nice, ballsy, modern metal tone. The finish is nice, the straplocks are nice, and the neck feels solid in my hand. I'll admit, the string spacing feels somewhat loose and the neck is pretty big, a contrast compared to the Schecter Stiletto Studio I used to play on. The final thing about this thing, is the bridge! They didn't play around while making this thing! The two bridges on this thing generate some serious sustain. While this makes the bass pretty body-heavy, that isn't a problem because neckdive will never be a problem.


Pros: Nice electronics and Pups stock, incredible sustain from bridge, straplocks stock

Cons: Finish was a tad too glossy, the Pups don't sit congruently (small problem easily fixable with some padding).

This was a steal for $500 at music123.com!

If any of you are going to purchase one, seriously consider music123.com. $100 off marking price and free shipping. I crossed my fingers on that one cause it was my first purchase with them, but my bass was shipped pretty promptly and I didn't have any problems.

Well, I just made an offer on Chaos Core 5 on Ebay for $500. I couldn't resist. The problem is I absolutely love my Warwick $$ NT, it sounds and feels perfect. I just have a serious lust for maple fretboards. I figured is this CC5 is 85-90% as good as the Warwick then I'd sell the Warwick and fill my pockets. I got such a great deal on the Warwick that I'm sure I could sell it and get $95% of my investment.

At the same time, I hope the seller rejects my offer. :rollno: I just don't know. I am not a two bass kinda guy. I guess I will have to see wha happens. The seller has about 46 hrs left to accept/reject my offer.

I checked my ebay messages and it seems that the seller didn't like my offer. The counter offer was $575. Thats still a good price but I think I will wait until local dealers get it in stock and try it out. The seller was only giving 72 hrs to check the bass out anyways and I'd prefer atleast two weeks.

Knowing me, I'll be posting next weeks saying "look at what I just got". ;)

That's exactly what I was thinking. I just saw that a local dealer does have one in stock (priced a little high). I'm going to check it out tomorrow and try to make a comparison. One of the things I don't like (based on photos) is that the CC5's access to upper frets are not as accessible as my $$. I'm also not too excited about the 5 selecter switch for the pups vs. the individual coil taps on mine.

Currently, my bass is selling for $2,999 at most retailers. To me, the above listed "dislikes" are extremely minor compared to the money I could've saved -or the $$ I'll put in my pockets if I buy CC5 and sell mine. Sounds like a win/win situation!

I just wanted to let everyone know,that the B string has lost it's life on my chaos.i think the strings are dadarrio's?but not sure.Pretty sad that after about a month the B string has very little sustain,where the other 4 are going strong! Oh i also had a small issue with 5 way switch,but now it is working normal.

It isn't the bass. I would try D'Addario Pro Steels or DR Lo-Riders if you want a better B string. Check the string forum for other recommendations for great strings. Lots of options. Rarely do the stock strings last that long so this should be considered part of the normal setup when you get a new bass.

So I saw a couple questions about the case and such so I took some shots. the pics of the bas is the case is no where near the correct color. I was just trying to show the case and its fit to the bass. the body pic is closer to the right color but it is still a bit bright. and then I took a close up of the CC logo on the rosewood .
