Trace Elliot Commando 60 - Changing the Speaker?

This is a follow up to my comments on the acoustic amp 25W rating (actually there's also a 45W version). That was a Kinsman that seemed like it might be a good deal for acoustic instruments and also for electric guitar when using a speaker and/or amplifier emulator, of which I have a number, e.g. Award-Session JD-10, MB-10 (two of each - at one point I had three JD-10s).

But another option that might be slightly cheaper is to reuse my old Trace Elliot Command 60 - 60W into a single 12" speaker. In its stock configuration it's not going to win any prizes for hi-fi clarity, although it's fine for a coffee house gig and a more basic sound. I can't find much information on what the speaker in it is in terms of Thiele-Small parameters, which is not helpful, but I wonder if a dual-cone speaker with tweeter might allow a broad enough frequency range to use this for acoustic instruments including ABG? Does anyone have experience with turning a small tweeter-less combo into something more hi-fi?

I have suitable preamps to take piezos directly, as I hated the preamp in my ABG and wired the piezo straight to the end pin! One of my acoustic guitars has a piezo, but the others have acoustic guitar magnetic pickups as one I didn't want to modify as I don't really have the skills, and the EKO Rangers from the 60s and 70s have adjustable bridges and I can't see how I would install one anyway. I have a good quality contact microphone to supplement the magnetics when required. Any preamp would need to go into the TE's preamp too as there isn't an effects loop, which might not be ideal.

Actually i feel the dual cone without a tweeter is a darn good application for a acoustic instrument.

I would just start with that and drop in a Beta12 LTA

if your dying for more high end or a tweeter its just a matter of finding
a simple horn flare that would fit on your baffle.

then add either the dirt cheap apt50 horn driver or move slightly up to
a apt80 driver.

you would just run the tweeter on the factory designed high pass
and run the 12" fullrange.

the detail of just the dual cone 12" would be more than fine
and yes for a single 12" literally 60 to 80 watts would be perfect

And many acoustic amps have that. I should have said I was comparing against all the other bass amps, PA, cabs etc., I have or have ever had, which have all had tweeters.

Funnily enough, I think that's exactly the speaker I was considering, or damn close, which is about half the cost of the Kinsman 45W acoustic combo and would probably do a better job with bass (and thus ABG) for the low volume gigs as back line, or as a personal monitor on a tilt-back stand or other method.

pretty much. good performance good price
and have a natural straight forward tone

your already familiar with the trace pre.
already assume you know its fine, and offers more or the same features as other amps
its mainly the instrument and hands that make the mojo.

drop in replacement with more top end clarity, is extra butter on a already good biscuit
