Tracking/Recording 101: Dos and Donts

Personally, it's a requirement that people use new strings when they come into my studio.

I haven't changed the flats on my P-Bass in six years. Guess I wouldn't play in your studio.

It all depends on the type of music you're coming in to record. See below:

It depends on the type of music you play. If you play more old school type music where flats are appropriate, that's fine.

Most bands that I record play heavy, aggressive music. For that new strings are important to achieve the sound. If you're not coming in to play heavy music, then new strings aren't as important.

I recorded with 4 year old flats exclusively over the last few years because I was in an acoustic/ballad type band. It's all what fits the music best!!

So question, What would you put in on leeway for new strings to record? Such as If I put new strings on my bass this weekend and go into the studio in Jan. And I play that bass a moderate amount. 1-2 times a week max.

For rounds, I'd have to hear them first. If they still have a good deal of brightness then they would probably be okay. My main concern is that the E string usually ages in tone more quickly than the rest of the set.

If you're playing flats then it wouldn't bother me.
