I don't think you can get a much better B than a Spector B. I totally get the "big" body though. I prefer a J style body because of size. I don't think I would let a Rebop go for an ATK, they just aren't in the same league, IMO.

The more I think about it, the main issue I have been having with this bass is the amp I have been running it through. I have been using a smallish amp with one 15" lately. Going through a combo with a 2x10 and a tweeter, it came to life. Gosh, I feel like a newbie for thinking of trading my Rebop!

Ill just say now that if anyone ever traded a gift I gave em, I'd be happy for them if it made them happier to do that.
If it were easy you wouldn't be asking for advice. It's the right thing to do if he is a good friend, and since he gave you a bass I'd have to assume he is.
Nah, I ordered a custom Valenti with the specs I've been thinking about for years and sold it because of GAS. The bass took longer to complete than I thought and GAS totally took over. I got the bass, flipped it, bought the bass I was GASsing for to realize that I missed my Valenti. Luckily the new owner wasn't attached and sold it back to me!

Hey, that's a nice Valenti! As for me, the amp is the issue. Going through a better
amp, the bass came life. Frankly, I like a modern tone, but my amp simply was not doing my Rebop justice. I will still have issues with body and fingerboard, but a whole lot of that comes down to reps and muscle memory. Furthermore, a better amp will be good for the rest of my basses too.
If it's a gift I keep it, barring any extenuating circumstances and then it would only be bartered or sold with a deep sense of guilt.

What a thoughtful thread. Nice to see that many felt it best to contact the friend first.
If I had given that gift to a friend and found out afterward that he had traded it, I would feel slightly hurt. If that friend called me first to talk about it - I would say go for it and be more than happy.

I am not being sarcastic, but I would be honest. Tell him the reason you want to trade it and offer to give it back (99.9% of the time it won't go back).
It would suck if this person came over and said "hey, play me a tune on the bass I gave you"!
Frankly, I am glad that the ATK just doesn't measure up to my Spector. Although I am sure my friend would have been cool about me trading it, but friendship is worth more than things. I just would not want to insult a friend.
Years ago, when we were just dating, my wife bought me a Squier acoustic guitar which brought me back to music after a 20 year lay off. After a few years, snobbery set and and I wouldn't play it. I really wanted to upgrade but didn't want to offend. Eventually I replaced it with an Alvarez. I love that guitar and she hasn't mentioned the missing Squier.
I was in the same situation. I was given a Traben that I ended up trading for an MTD Kingston Heir. When my friend saw me with the MTD he promptly told me "I was wondering when you'd upgrade!" 
Moral of the story: My experience says go for it. Plus, the ATK805s are GLORIOUS.

i personally would be in bad taste to trade a gift.
there are some things you just don`t do.
I don't agree that trading a bass is always bad, but in my case it would have been the wrong thing to do. It is one thing to trade or sell a beginner bass, but a Rebop is a bass with a $1,600 street price. Whether my friend gave it to me because he knew I would sound good on a Spector, or he let it go because it just didn't suit him, he still had the option to sell it or trade it himself. He did not have to think of me at all! This knowledge is why I wrestled so hard with trading it, and eventually posted to work this out with some fellow bassists' advice.
