Hey everyone. I know these posts are sometimes annoying and hard to give informed advice without all the details, BUT, I have a trade in the works right now that I could use some of your expert knowledge on. FYI, I own a 96 American Jazz that gets used 100% of the time over this P Deluxe. I have been interested in Ricks forever, but have hardly every played one. I know they are vastly different basses, which is a big part of the appeal for studio work. Okay, go!

I'd be giving up:
- mint 2012 American Fender P Deluxe - black with maple fretboard; PLUS
- 2007 Ampeg SVT Classic head (Vietnam)

In exchange for:
- very good condition 1993 Rickenbacker 4003 (black) with original case; PLUS
- $150

I don't know, early 90's Rics have nice necks and pickups though. Are you getting or giving the 150 bucks? The way you worded it it looks like you're getting back 150.00, I didn't answer.

I would maybe do it because I love ricks, but the rick would have to be in really good shape to give up an entire gig rig for it. Is it a 4003 or 4003s? The 4003 is the more valuable of the two, if it's a 4003s, I dunno....

Reason being, it's probable that you could sell that rig outright and buy a brand new 4003s, or even a 4003. Or be pretty close to it.

I would, I've owned two early-mid 90's 4003's and they have something special and I've owned a LOT of them over the years, the necks are smaller and the pickups are really powerful but retain the older sound. I bought a beat mid 90's jetglo run of the mill 4003 about ten years ago, it looked like a refugee from a punk band, dents all over the place. I put Fender flats on it and I got compliments on the tone of that bass almost every time i played it, and it also played very nice. I am primarily a Fender player by the way although I do own Rics and Gibsons. It was just as useful as a P bass is to me, (go to bass), I'm sorry I let it go.

Not if it's a 93, there were very few 4003S's made until very recently.

I'll take your word for it and I think you're right, since I can't remember when they quit making the s. Mine was a mid/late 80's and even though I loved it, it was worthless at the time. I think I sold it for college money when I went back to school in the early 90's. I got $300 for it.

I'm glad rickenbacker reissued it, though. I think it actually looks a little better than the 4003 and usually $200 or cheaper. And if you ever need to refret it, you don't have to deal with that binding on the neck...

Oh yeah I can remember seeing a jetglo 4001S in a music store for about three hundred bucks probably 20 years ago and looking down my nose at it, haha! I like the looks better too and am considering getting a new 4003S.

I'd be inclined to work some sort of 'bass for bass' trade, bearing in mind Rics are probably higher resale these days vs. a perfectly good P Bass. For me, AND the SVT (even IF it is a Vietnamese production one) rules this out.
