Trans. Boost for Ray Special

Trying a new rig configuration (don't want to get into those details unless you PM me), and I'm very happy with it, except... I don't feel like my Ray specials are getting the top bite like they will on most other rigs. Even with the bass preamp at full treble boost and the head at 4 is o'clock, it's not quite getting there for me.

Does a bass-friendly pre-amp pedal with a transparent treble boost exist? I've tried my OG Dunlop Echoplex and the Ray just doesn't respond to it the way a passive bass does.

after some reading up, I'm interested in the MXR Fat Sugar drive. While geared towards guitar, I've read in multiple places that it has a nice clean boost that tends to accentuate the highs.

The logical next step is to just put a new pair of strings and see what happens... but I have 3 gigs between now and the next time I could have the bass in question on my work bench.

btw, I'm relatively new to pedals so if you come at me with too much techy lingo I might not understand what you're talking about.

Yeah if you're struggling to get highs out of that bass there's another factor. Your hunch about dead strings seems correct.

If there is no sparkle left in your strings, you can boost until you're blue in the face and never get there. My suggestion? Learn how to change strings on the road. You shouldn't need "your workbench" to change strings.
