What is your current van? Do you use it to capacity? Will you use the transit to capacity? Will it get out of it's own way? Will it pass inspection with the body damage? (it won't here.)

OR

Carrots.
Current van is a 2002 Chevy Express window van. It started life as a crew hauler for the highway department. I got it six years ago, and it had clearly lost a bunch of minor skirmishes with heavy equipment, and then had been fixed with slowly declining competency and interest. It's got 145K on it now, and has one back seat. The rest is cargo space. It no longer smells like crushed aggregate and cheap cigar smoke inside, too, so there's that. It is a great van in nearly all ways, and I would expect it to last at least ten more years and at least another 100K miles, whichever one came last. The reasons I'm considering replacing it:
1. It gets 14mpg in town 18 (almost) on the freeway on long trips.
2. It doesn't fit into parking garages and barely fits in most parking stalls.
3. My wife won't drive it because it is too big.
4. I don't need as big a van, since the bed of a first generation Transit Connect is nearly as big as the cargo bed of the current van. I never pile things to the roof of the Chevy, and probably wouldn't in the Transit Connect. But, I could if necessary.
5. The Chevy has a pushrod 305 engine, which means it's a gutless wonder - the Transit Connect might be noisier and busier getting up to speed, but it won't be any slower. And, if I want to go fast, I ride the motorcycle.
6. The Chevy is dark green - you can't miss it, and nobody ever does. I can't tell you how many times it has been hit. Its bodywork is a whole lot nicer now, thanks to other people's insurance, than it was when I got it. The Ford is white - ugly but really visible. It was damaged because somebody put it in neutral and didn't set the brake, so I'm told. It rolled into a barrier, which broke a headlight and bent a fender and the hood.

There are reasons to keep the Chevy. It's paid for and I could buy a whole lot of fuel for the difference in price I'm likely to get for the Chevy and purchase price of the Ford. The Chevy is dark green with blacked out windows and looks pretty nice in a slightly sinister way. Never mind the surface ripples. The Ford is butt ugly, white, and looks like every other road slug that's in your way. If there's any underlying damage beyond the headlight and some superficial sheet metal, I won't buy it. If it's just some bent metal, it will go to Maaco and get a couple tons of Bondo or whatever they do. I have only seen pictures and haven't looked under the hood to see what's behind the damaged parts. Maybe no problems, maybe a lot of problems. So, there's too much information. Maybe I need an Edsel.

would that make it underpowered for heavier equipment loading? (not really a car guy, here.) thanks.

OP: i like the idea. i voted as such. good luck with your hauling choices!

New, it had ~130hp, in a vehicle that weighs 3500lbs, or about 25lbs/hp. In comparison, most new minivans have around 275hp and weighs 4500lbs, or 16lbs/hp.

It was designed as a city delivery vehicle. Maneuverability and gas mileage were more important than acceleration and highway noise.

Interesting how coincidences happen, just a couple of days ago I got online to find a replacement for my 2000 Pontiac Montana short wheelbase 8 passenger minivan. The only one I could find that fit the size is a new Ford Transit Connect Passenger XL, but one very important element for me with a new car is that the dealer be nearby for service. There's not one close enough to be at all convenient, also, it's missing a couple features I really want, power sliding passenger doors and power folding side mirrors.

The two closest dealers to me are Mercedes about 8 blocks away, and Lexus, about 6 blocks away. The only thing Merceds has is the Metris Van, which is gigantic compared to mine, and costs about $45,000. There's no Lexus van, BUT... I realized that Lexus is a Toyota premium line, so I called the Lexus dealer to ask if they service Toyota, they sure do under the Toyota warranty. So I checked out the Toyota Sienna. It's about $35,000 and has all the features I want, but it's a little bigger than my Montana. So I decided when the time is right, I'm buying the Toyota.
This is exactly the kind of aside that's perfect for TB. Thank you!

And that's how it would mostly get used. Hauling band equipment and random other stuff relatively short distances. I may drive it to LA once or twice, but it mostly won't go on long trips. I'm not worried about quickness or top speed. Noise kinda sucks, but my current van is loud inside, too, so as long as it isn't deafening, then it's OK. Chances are it would not exceed 30 mph more than a few times per week, if that.

Sounds like it's time to 'transit' from a Chevy and 'connect' with a Ford.

Focusvan. There's a handful of mountainbikey kayakers out here beating tha crap out of theirs. I don't personally know any of them but I do know a few folks who took their 02-09 focuses up near 180k.

Dark green with tinted windows and the rumbling wheeze o five... I kinda want one to pound through the winter.

Or purple. Maybe it should just get painted purple instead of carrot orange. If it isn't sold yet. I have not heard back from the seller about setting up a time to see it this weekend.
:lock: Can't go wrong there (unless you're a Coug.)

Randos about town occasionally ask "Husky fan, eh?"
I'm like, "Who?? Ohhh, sportsball." :smug:

Well I admit to being a sportsball fan of various kinds. Turns out the seller still has it. I will probably look at it Sunday afternoon. My wife seems to think it is a good idea, and it would be several hundred dollars a year cheaper to insure. That makes no sense, but I will take it and say thank you. Next step, lowering kit, fancy wheels and a shag carpet interior!

We have a fleet of them here at work and I've used one for a week at a time. I actually like them a lot. Better get up and go than you would imagine too. I transported 3 BIG guys for 4 days last summer in one and they were comfortable. We mostly use them for hot shot deliveries and trips to the airport for express runs. They rarely give us problems.

Jeez! Craigslist! The seller just called me back. He still has the van. So, maybe I will be looking at a lowering kit and some blingin' wheels after all. Or maybe just a headlight to replace the damaged one.

For what it's worth, I voted "you are a moron" mostly because that's what I always say to the funny looking guy who stares at me in the mirror every morning. To the other voter who said "you are a moron," I don't know who you are, but I agree completely. An Edsel would even make me a better person, but there just isn't one available.
