Hi fellow pickers here is a chart I used to use when teaching, can be used to transpose, identify notes in any key, work out chords. hope this comes out o.k.

I am retired and don't have students now, but with 60 years experience 45 as a pro I tended to know what my students needed and didn't need to know. Teaching should also relax your student not make them feel like it was all like rocket science.

The best result I had over the years, was with my nephew , he wanted to learn bass, he knew I was a lead player but could also play bass, among other things he applied himself and within 3 months was playing with a reasonable band. I am sure you know its very gratifying when students really want to learn how to play "Music" and not want to play "Smoke on the water", or "Stairway to heaven" the first lesson. I concur iamgroot, I never do things in half measure, there is no point in that, I used to say to students if you don't understand tell me, I don't care if I go over it 50 times as long as eventually you understand.View attachment 3198010

My choice on transposition was to allow sight reading horn and wind parts.

I played bass for years behind a jazz singer who would call standards and announce the key right before he counted it off. It was ugly at first, but improved me immensely. He was an olt timer and he was training us on the job.

Now I am a piano student and transposing piano is much more complex than guitar or bass as the fingering changes with each key, especially if you go from a sharp to a flat key. My instructor has perfect pitch and I drive her crazy by playing The Bach WTC Prelude in C....in other keys.

I suppose in some ways Iamgroot if it wasn't different there would be little point and no challenge, ai think the more instruments you play the more accomplished musician you become. I used to play lead guitar in a jazz quartet the band leader was so good he used to be writing out a whole score while drinking tea and talking to me. Some folk are just incredibly gifted. We all have different methods what we believe as with all things is merely OUR opinion it doesn't mean its etched in stone. What works for one wont for another

That's good, whatever works for you as I say, I was backstage at Wembley arena 1978/9 and a young country singer Ronnie Milsap was on stage, I learned that he was brought up playing classical music on the piano and was an accountant, he had changed genre when advised to do so by Ray Charles.(Nice story behind this) One song I particularly like of his "It was almost like a song" then comedy Victor Borge etc, etc Keep pickin n grinning.

Don't underestimate yourself, do listeners say He's got persistence or He's got talent.? The latter I'm sure.
