Treble/punch

Hi,

I have a 15 watt fender rumble, and it's clear to me that I need a new amp. I have an OLP stingray, and I'm looking for a better, louder amp. I'm really not looking for something on the deep end; I really want something with great, ringing mids and treble, and packs a ******** of punch. Think "Lounge act" by nirvana, or almost anything played by Rage in their first album. I have the bass for it (the OLP isn't great, but it sounds good enough), but I'm missing the amp.

P.S. I'm 16 and don't have any real money. Any good amps under, let's say, $200-$300.

To clarify, not saying that a Peavey Combo 300 isn't a bad idea (grant bang for the buck), but I want something with NO, I mean NO mud or muffled low ends. I mean, I want the CLEAREST lows that you can hear. I hate to use another nirvana allusion, but listen to in bloom. The f# that Krist plays in the verse...that's basically what I want with my low ends. Punch, sting, and NO mud.

P.S. I know, as bassists, we can't stand treble, but I'm looking for something that is going to let me be a lead instrument in a band, and not some muffled sound in the background

If you want no mud and the clearest lows in the land, buy some new strings... How old are your strings?? :eyebrow:
Oh and for the clearest of the clear, use a pick...

very new strings (blue steels :bawl:). I'm not good with a pick. Plus my bass doesn't really the the difference; pick or finer, it gets a pretty crisp sound. Plus, picks are for girls

I find that the clearest lows is actually more mids and less of a rise in bass response below the low A. More treble helps too. Clearest to me doesn't mean boomy, or scooped mids and highs. Clearest to me means I can tell what note I am clearly playing in a band setting. You can get this with a $150 Bill Fitzmaurice O10 if you build it yourselfm or by a used one for under $300. I have also been able to get it with my GK1001RB combo cab fitted with B&C HPL64 10" woofers too. Both cabs have a rising mid response out of the woofer that gives some growl and character, and neither have exaggerated bottom octaves. This is probably because both cabs use a driver with good midrange characteristics, unlike many stock bass cab drivers. You also need to adjust EQ and pickup selection to get the sound you want. I'm usually flat EQ on the amp and the bass, but when I want the megalomaniac growl, I roll to the front bridge a little and boost some highs. Very versitile. Having a more full range cab (like a PA cab) allows you to get different sounds based on input. You just have to play around and see what you like. It took me years to realize that what sounded good in GC and the bedroom didn't cut it on stage.

Why? Because you don't know how to use one? Trust me: You don't want to go there... :eyebrow:

MM

d'arcy, chick; guy from interpol, goth; bassists from the Smashing Pumpkins, mostly chicks. All use picks.

On the flip side- Flea, man; Claypool, man; Wooten, manly man. Either use finger or slap (or both AT THE SAME TIME).

Like I said though, my bass doesn't distinguish pick from finger

you're cruisin for a brusin with comments like that...

any self respecting female bassist, or bassist who uses a pick, or myself, (neither female nor a big fan of picks), should point out to that that's a VERY scewed and ignorant outlook to have.

not to mention having met wooten, your "manly man", he would also not approve of comments like that.

I am just kidding, but, honest to god almighty, if I play close enough to the bridge (about at the edge of my pickup, where I normally pick) there's no difference in sound. trust me, I've tried. I've tested.

i might be going out on a limb....but, maybe an eden nemesis combo, i'm pretty sure u can find one used around your range. perhaps an ashdown mag series combo, pretty inexpensive. i've had good results with an ashdown abm series, which is obviously better than the mag...but i think maybe the mag could do it. and although it might be a bit muddy, definately worth trying. maybe a used swr workingmans combo, also cheap and pretty good. i used one when i was younger. look, you're gonna have to compromise somewhere. i chased krist novoselics tone on nevermind too. you're not gonna get it. i think the suggestions i gave might, however, get you at least the crisp lows that you wanted. when you're on that tight of a budget you have to stay open minded and try everything you can.
