It can be very difficult to give up using an amp on stage, especially if you’ve been playing for quite some years like myself. We have memories of buying our first amp/speaker cab/combo, all the subsequent years of upgrading our equipment, trading, buying, looking at reviews for the next best thing and then suddenly you have to give all this up, whether it be a band decision, venues or personal preference you suddenly find yourself standing on a stage with nothing behind you, after all those years, all you have is possibly a couple of guitar stands. It is a very strange feeling.

For FOH-supported gigs, we use in-ears and amps at reasonable stage volume, acoustic drums. The in-ears are super for harmony vocals, or bringing up an acoustic guitar or keys, etc. With those important differences noted, it’s not much different from using molded 15db plugs along with wedge monitors. Everyone, even the sound tech, likes some stage volume. I said SOME! I still mostly use my amp’s DI to go to the house. Call it a middle ground.
