I took a 2+ hour ride to John Fox Bass in NH yesterday. He’s got 70 basses mostly for sale there. I highly recommend the place to all of you collector types. I never saw so many desirable basses in one place. A lot of high end stuff that’s just beyond my comfort zone financially, but it was really cool to noodle on a bunch of them. He also has a bunch of Dingwalls in stock which was what I was interested in. John’s a good guy and we wasted hours babbling about basses.
The visit also answered a few questions I’ve had about high end basses. Are they worth it? Certainly some of them were excellent instruments that played like the proverbial butter. Whether you want to pay that much money for them is a personal choice, but being able to lay hands on some of them was very enjoyable. He also had a 2014 (?) American P bass. It was one of those “if you find a good one, you’ll know” Fenders I guess. Nothing really special about it, but it just played and sounded great. I also played a single cut something or other that looks kinda weird to me, but I’ll be damned if that 34” B string didn’t sound really good.
I highly recommend the place to anyone in the market for a good and maybe unique instrument.
