i'm probably sounding dumb for saying this, but what is true bypass, as opposed to...um..well, fake bypass? also sorry if this is a repeated thread!

true bypass?

On a true bypass circuit the bypass signal comes off of the switch directly to the out put. This is important because many effects incorporate a part of the circuit to serve as a bypass and this can lead to 'insertion loss' sucking away some of your original clean tone.
