I'm definitely not an expert on these 'bergers. But,I just naturally assumed that all these basses finished in colors other than the "standard" black were painted (front & back).
So,here's my question:confused:: Do the more rare,"custom colored" Steinbergers have just the front painted too??

nah, they used to sell 'em with a white faceplate as well as the solid color which isn't paint, it's colored gel coat. and yes, the oddball colored bergers (yellow, blue, silver, red) are ALL yellow and blue and silver and red, not just the faceplate. check out the photo galleries Invalid Link Removed

Allan Holdsworth had a black GL with a white faceplate, and this became popular thereafter.

Serial number database has it as white with a Roland Synth added but the holes for trim pots are not present io the photos.

I'd say the log is wrong

I doubt it is a parts bass - that didnt really happen with Steinberger

The serial number is stamped on the body, and the Steinberger original serial number database lists it as white

Given a very small percentage were not black, and the database doesn't differentiate between Holdsworth style white ( black with white top) and ALL white, I'd say its legit.

They were NEVER painted usually by the way, though Bowie and Reeves Gabrels' GLs may have been.

My experience with the stinebergers. The L series was black all black the XL came in black, white and very rare yellow. their were no bi color basses in that line. The Q series had several different model colors then it was music yo and they had alot of natural tones and fades then gibson got ahold of them and it was all over. Check out Ed Romans site he was Ned Steinbergers right hand man. Their might have been some repaired or replace faces but not from the factory.

NO NO NO!!

A post full of misinformation.

Ed Roman was NOT Ned Steinberger's right hand man by any measure or means. In Steinberger circles, most people have the opinion that much of what MR Roman has to say is to be taken with a pinch of salt. And that's being kind about it.

Your time line is wrong, it was Music Yo AFTER Gibson, and Music Yo is a division of Gibson anyway. Your information on colours is wrong also

There WERE black Steinbergers with white faceplates. Rare, but there definitely WERE. Serial number 3377 was ordered from the factory that way, as was 3797, as was 7645.

There were red ones ( serial T9545 for example) and a purple one ( serial 9588) and 30 silver ones.

BIG +1.

I think the silver ones were painted. I'm not sure on the other oddballs, but my red one is gel coat.

steinbergers with white face plates are really not that rare.

I once owned an all white (Neck, body and face plate) 5 string XL. A color like that is very rare.

Steinberger even made a silver XL and a yellow XL.

The white faceplate ones would have been less common than all-white Jauqo, but the fact that yours was a 5, might weight it back towards more rare again.

The purple and yellow 5s were one-offs, making them particularly rare.

I've seen my share of XL's with the white face plate. The first one was Jamaaladden Tacuma's in 86.

The only thing that wasen't white on it was the fb,the nut,the knobs and the bridge. And the string spacing was very tight(it wasn't the XLW model).
