Trying to decide between Ampeg cabs...

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums but I've been reading a lot lately. I recently bought an Ampeg SVT - CL and am debating what to pair it with. At the moment I'm running through a 4 ohm 300 watt Crate 215 cab. Should I pair that with a 410 hlf or buy the ampeg 810? Is there another cab I should try?

I play two Ibanez bases - a BTB 4 stringer and an SR505. I also play a Hartke xl4 sometimes. I'm not trying to plug my band here, but you can check it out at Link Removed to get an idea of the sound we're going for.

I tried the 410 at GC and loved it, but i hear great things about the 810. Is the crate 215 worth keeping? I run through the pa for most gigs, the 410 would probably be enough for the smaller rooms and I could always use the 215 along with it if i need more volume. I dunno.

I just bought an Ampeg SVT-CL and am trying to figure out what cab to buy too. The NV-215 or NV-610 look great but I would have to drive 250-300 miles to find their nearest dealer.
Some others that I'm considering.

The Aguilar 4x12
The Genz-Benz 610T-XB2 (top of the list so far)
Ampeg 8x10
Mesa Powerhouse 1000, 2x15, or 8x10
other brands 8x10 cabs.
15 or 18 with 4x10 on top (Bag End brand or other)

The ampeg 8x10 is cheaper than most others 8X10's and I hear it's made out of pressboard not plywood now. Also the Frequency response is higher than most other 8x10 cabs.

Who makes the best 8x10 cab? Anyone have any experience with a cab to pair with the SVT-CL?

Thanks,

The Ampeg HLF is a very different cab series from the E or HE series. HLF's are ported, and the E and HE's are not. The H designates a tweeter, E is enclosed, LF is Low Frequency, IIRC. Any E or HE will give you a much tighter and focused tone, and probably be a little more vintage sounding, especially the E series. The HLF series is ported, so it will have a looser bottom, and will seem to have much more low end. My personal preference is to run E or HE cabs with the SVT tube heads, and the HLF with heads like the SVT-4.

Hope that helps.

Jerrold Tiers, who used to work for SLM as a designer, informed me today that shortly before the LOUD sale, Ampeg gave up on the pressboard and went back to birch plywood. So any new Ampeg cabs should be made totally out of plywood from now on. If you want to make sure, have the salesman pop a speaker and take a look inside first.
