Trying to decide between interfaces (i searched)

Currently working on a small recording setup. I already plan on using my Behringer XENYX 2222FX, which has 8 channel inserts. My original goal was to use a Digi001 interface, which can be had on ebay for ~$150. I'm worried about compatibility with xp/vista (I have both). I also don't like that the newer pro tools versions have dropped support for it.

So I've been looking for a decent 8 channel interface. I don't need it to do anything other than carry 8 channels into the computer, so I dont want to spend the extra money on firewire mixers and the like. Ive been looking at the M-Audio Delta 1010 LT

But I'm not sure about the RCA connectors, I'd have to use adapters, which seems hinky.

Any suggestions?

I know you said you wanted to stay away from firewire mixers, but I've had great success using an M Audio 1814 interface. I use my own mixer, the 1814 just gets it all to the computer easily. Recording drums was a beeze with it.

unless you can get digi gear dirt cheap my advice is to stay far away from it. You pay way to much for "protools" setup of lesser quality than if you went with say a used motu or presonus interface. With any firewire interface you should always be prepared to also buy a firewire only card. Texas Instruments chiped cards are typically the best to use. Try, whatever interface you go for, with your stock firewire port first but if you experience a lot of problems you firewire port may very well be the one to blame. Before jumping in to firewire do a search and see what things may arise and how they are solved that way you are a little wiser right off the bat and you get frustrated like so many others have.

I've personally been running 3 presonus firepods with no problems at all but from what I understand my experience has been extremely easy compared to most.

So my suggestions for on the cheap is look at used MOTU, Presonus, RME and M-Audio (not really the 1010lt though). You pay a little more for these than the Behringer but imo it's well worth the extra. Once you get into it you are going to wish you had something a little better anyways... it never ends!

Unless you are going to run Pro Tools stay away from Digi gear. View it as a expensive dongle required for Pro Tools. If you do run Pro Tools be very careful about the versions of OS you run they are very picky there too. M-Audio depends on which product some are okay, but again if not running Pro Tools there is better stuff to consider.

Pick your software, decided on your budget, see what hardware and OS version your software supports. Then start looking.

I got the 001 for $75 bucks, so price point compared to most interfaces you guys suggested is about $325 less. I normally run vista, but far as I know nothing recording related runs well vista, so I already had a separate hard drive with XP installed and dual booted.

Also, I use sonar usually, and luckily they included support for digi gear, so I should be able to use either pro tools or sonar. The thing I like about using pro tools though, is I can take my recorded tracks to any major studio for mixing (not going to spend a ton on monitors) and its a seamless import. No hassles.

So far I'm completely happy with the digi 001, I recorded a full length cd on one about 5 years ago, and I loved it then, and now that I have my own, its even better.
