We have a tight and fairly loud practice room, I've been using the DR 40 in 4-Channel mode with the internal mics as room mic's and connecting to the mixer aux out with the other ext. connections. We just use a small Mackie mixer and it only has a single Aux. channel, it's a balanced mono connection and I just use a stereo connection into an XLR splitter (basically dual mono to the DR 40). The channels 1 & 2 on the mixer have 1/4" inserts connection, and I'm wondering if I can pull the lead vocals from the insert on Ch. 1 and then grab a mix of lead and backing vocals from the Aux out. I'm pretty sure that the DR 40 doesn't allow for indepndent level controls, just external and internal in stereo. I don't expect great recordings with this setup, but would like some control over the lead vocal for cleanup.
The recording below is from practice this week. Not terrible but it took a fair amount of work to get it sounding OK. This mixer does have a USB connection, we only run congas and vocals through the mixer which is why the DR40 is my first choice (plus it's easier). Just for chits and giggles - if we did get a USB recording with the DR40, is there a way to correctly sync up the two sources? Beyond my engineer skill set...
I figure the TB hive mind might some ideas...
