Long ago I ran into a website that had sound descriptions for various preamp tubes... I can no longer find that. Pretty sure I saw the link here once but I searched a while and still can't come up with it. Anyone know of such a site?

Not necessarily a global reference, but Groove Tubes has some verbage about the sounds of the various makes of the preamp tubes they sell.
