Tube Testers

Does anybody have any good information on which of these tube testers out there will test 6550's, 12ax7's and 12au7's? All of these testers are practically antiques by now and it's hard to find onfo on them. Which model will test all three of the above mentioned tubes? I'm in the market for a tube tester to try and suppliment my sluggish marine electronics business, so you amp techs out there who have any good info on this, please speak up? Also looking for an o-scope and a bias meter if you have any good ideas on these.
 
If you are hoping to test and MATCH tubes, forget it....... almost NO tube tester made will do that. They are usually made for very generic "pass/fail" screening, usually on the basis of 'emission"..... which amounts basically to how close to the original spec they are as far as max current at a particular bias condition.

A very few testers WILL do that, but if you want to match them, you will almost certainly need to make your own tester.

Most testers will NOT:

find noisy tubes, unless they are REALLY bad.

match tubes (as noted above)

really check the tube for gain, etc.

find microphonics

give you any hard number data at all.... most give only a "good" (green) or "bad" (red)


if you just want to find dud tubes, most testers will do that. And that is fine for radio and TV tubes where function is fairly non-critical compared to most audio tubes.
 
A few years ago I thought about building/repairing tube amps, even aquired a couple testers (Eico 666 and 667) as well as an oscilloscope and other testing equipment.

Well, I ended up selling everything due to lack of time and patients.... and money. Both testers were in need of repairs, sockets were burned up, meters were not working, and if you can find replacement parts, they ain't cheap!

I would not put faith in any "tube tester" per say. Depends what you want it to do. As already mentioned, it might tell you if a tube is operating within a certain range of "good/bad" "weak/strong". But that is about it, you will have no idea how long a "good" tube will last. It could be in spec one day and fail a week later. Micro phonic, high noise, low noise, matching, etc. forget it. If you suspect a tube, replace it. That is the best test.
That is my opinion. It is worth every penny you paid for it.

So... how do you test tubes, other than to follow the signal through the circuit? Just curious. I have no intent to mess around with tubes.

The tube folks had large test benches for that. When I toured Richardson Electronics somewhere around 1988 or so, they still had several, and the pieces of a transfer line to build an industrial welding tube.

You need to be able to measure and vary bias, plate voltage, screen voltage, etc. That's how those curves of gain etc are generated.

To match tubes, you would likely set a bias voltage, and group the tubes based on their plate current with some specific plate voltage and screen voltage. Your choice of bias voltage is based on the tube characteristics, and the "spread" you get.

Alternately, and possibly better, you could set plate voltage etc, and measure the grid bias needed to get a specific plate current. That would give the best indication for a specific amp, like an SVT, where the desired idle plate current is known, and bias voltage is adjustable.

For a fixed bias, like the Mesa, you would use the fixed bias voltage, and select an acceptable grouping around your target idle plate current.

To match gains, you'd do different things.

The standard tube tester cannot do any of those measurements in a meaningful way, although you can, with some, get a VERY rough matching. You need to know details of the tester circuit to know if that is possible or not.
 
Wow - sounds like a lot of work. I wouldn't think the average tech could spend so much effort on testing like this. It would get too expensive.

Mesa at least gives a 6 month warranty, which is twice any other manufacturer gives. I wonder if they will rest test them for you before the warranty is up?

man, I was just out at the Groove Tube facility two weeks ago, watching them test tubes. Now I wish I paid more attention.

There were "racks" of mounted sockets though....with many, many tubes plugged in. On a computer, there was a screen denoting the plate and screen voltages etc., of each tube in a corresponding, numbered socket.

I'm not sure what type of software was involved. :o

Fora basic "hey, dis is prob'ly bad" measurement, the regular tube testers are fine. They WILL find a bad tube, but they can't tell you "HOW bad" reliably.

A long time ago, like into the 1960's, every corner drugstore had a tube tester in it, because electronics used tubes......... They were pretty much a joke, too, but they would find a dead tube.
